Healing from the inside out

Some things are too deep for words. Brainspotting reaches them anyway.

Brainspotting is a relatively newer therapy — but what it can access is profound. Developed from the principles of EMDR, it’s based on a simple but powerful discovery: where you look affects how you feel. Specific eye positions — called brainspots — can unlock traumatic memories, emotions, and physical sensations stored deep in the nervous system. Memories that talk therapy often can’t reach.

In short: Brainspotting is a deep, focused therapy that helps you process trauma, difficult emotions, or physical tension that may be stuck in your system. By pairing a specific point in your visual field with bilateral stimulation, we bypass the “thinking” brain to access and release the root of what you’ve been suppressing or avoiding. It’s a powerful way to heal without needing to find all the right words.

At Light Within Counseling, Brainspotting is offered within a trauma-informed, relational framework — always at your pace, always with your safety at the center. You don’t have to find the words for what happened. Your brain and body will do the work.

What is Brainspotting used to treat?

  • Trauma & PTSD
  • Anxiety & Chronic Stress
  • Depression
  • Grief & Loss
  • OCD & Intrusive Thoughts
  • Chronic Pain & Physical Symptoms
  • Performance Issues
  • Addiction & Substance Use
  • Those Who’ve Struggled with Traditional Therapy

Clients choose brainspotting because:

It Goes Beyond Words: You don’t have to find the “right” words to describe your pain for it to heal.

It’s Fast & Effective: Because it targets the nervous system directly, many people experience shifts more quickly than with traditional methods.

It’s Versatile: It is highly effective for anxiety, PTSD, depression, chronic pain, and even enhancing athletic or creative performance.

How does Brainspotting work?

Brainspotting is a powerful, focused treatment method that works by identifying, processing, and releasing core neurobiological sources of emotional/body pain, trauma, and a variety of other challenging symptoms.

Traditional talk therapy focuses on the “thinking” part of your brain. Brainspotting goes deeper. It taps into the subcortical brain—the area responsible for motion, consciousness, and survival—where deep-seated trauma and emotions are often stored.

  1. Finding the “Spot”: Your therapist helps you find a specific eye position (a “Brainspot”) that connects to a specific emotional or physical issue.
  2. Processing: By maintaining that gaze, you allow your brain to scan itself and begin the natural process of “unloading” the stress or trauma associated with that spot.
  3. Resolution: This leads to a deep release of tension and a more permanent resolution of the issue than talk therapy alone often provides.

What to Expect in a Brainspotting Therapy Session

Brainspotting sessions are quieter than most therapy — and that’s intentional.

Your therapist will help you identify something you want to work on — a feeling, a memory, a physical sensation, or a belief. Using a pointer, they’ll guide your gaze to different positions and pay attention to subtle cues in your body and eyes that indicate where activation is held. Once a brainspot is found, you’ll rest your gaze there while noticing whatever arises internally.

There’s no pressure to talk through what you’re experiencing. Some people share a little; others process almost entirely in silence. Your therapist stays present and attuned throughout — this is a deeply relational process even when it’s quiet.

Sessions often feel different from what people expect — slower, more internal, more somatic. Many clients leave feeling lighter, clearer, or like something they’ve been carrying has finally started to shift.

This isn’t therapy where you just vent and nothing changes. This is therapy that creates actual shifts in how you feel.

Brainspotting works for all ages and all kinds of experiences.

Brainspotting for Children

Gentle and non-verbal by nature, Brainspotting is particularly well-suited for children who can’t yet articulate what they’ve been through. The body leads — no words required.

Brainspotting for Teens

Adolescents who struggle to open up verbally often find Brainspotting surprisingly accessible. It meets them where they are without requiring them to explain themselves.

Brainspotting for Adults

Whether you’re processing recent trauma or something you’ve carried for decades — Brainspotting can reach what other approaches haven’t.

What exactly is a brainspot?

A brainspot is a specific eye position that correlates with emotional or physiological activation in the body. When you hold your gaze at that position, it creates a direct connection to the deeper brain structures where trauma and emotional pain are stored — allowing them to be processed and released.

How is Brainspotting different from EMDR?

Both are body-based trauma therapies that go beyond talk therapy. EMDR uses repeated sets of bilateral stimulation to process memories. Brainspotting uses a fixed eye position and a more sustained, internal processing experience. Both are effective — some people respond more strongly to one than the other, and we’re trained in both.

Do I have to talk about what happened?

No. Brainspotting is one of the most non-verbal therapy approaches available. You don’t need to narrate your trauma or find the right words. Your body and brain lead the process — your therapist simply helps you access it.

Is Brainspotting evidence-based?

Yes. While newer than EMDR, Brainspotting has a growing body of research supporting its effectiveness for trauma, PTSD, anxiety, and other presentations. It’s recognized and used by trauma specialists worldwide.

What does a session actually feel like?

Quieter than most therapy. More internal. People often describe feeling a gradual release — like something loosening that’s been held tightly for a long time. Some sessions feel intense; others feel almost meditative. Most people notice something has shifted, even if they can’t fully articulate what.

Is Brainspotting safe?

Yes — and your safety is always the priority. We spend time building stabilization resources before processing begins, and sessions always end with grounding to ensure you feel settled before leaving.

Can Brainspotting help if I've tried other therapies and they haven't worked?

Often yes. Brainspotting accesses deeper neurological pathways than most conventional approaches — which is why it can help people who’ve done significant talk therapy or even EMDR without fully resolving their symptoms.

How many sessions does Brainspotting take?

This varies depending on what you’re processing. Some people experience significant shifts in just a few sessions. Complex or longstanding trauma typically takes longer. We’ll give you a realistic picture early on.

Can Brainspotting be done virtually?

Yes. Virtual Brainspotting is effective — your therapist can guide the process through a screen with adjustments to the technique that work well for telehealth.

Is Brainspotting appropriate for children?

Yes — and it’s particularly well-suited for children because of its non-verbal nature. Kids don’t need to explain or articulate what happened for Brainspotting to help them heal from it.

How do I prepare for my first session?

Come as you are. Think about what you’d like to achieve and any questions you have. Bring information about previous treatment or medications if applicable.
