Parenting Counseling

In-Person Therapy in Roseville, CA & Virtual Therapy Throughout California

You don’t have to figure this out alone!

Parenting is the hardest job you’ll ever love. It’s okay to need support.

Every parent hits a wall at some point. Maybe it’s a child whose behavior you don’t know how to reach. Maybe it’s a co-parenting situation that’s draining everyone. Maybe you’re just exhausted from trying to hold it all together and quietly wondering if you’re doing any of it right. Parenting counseling gives you a space to exhale — and to get real, practical support from someone who genuinely understands.

At Light Within Counseling, we work with parents at every stage — from navigating a new baby to raising teens, co-parenting after divorce, or supporting a child through mental health struggles. Whatever you’re carrying, you don’t have to figure it out alone.

You might be here because…

  • Your child is struggling and you feel helpless watching it happen
  • You and your co-parent can’t seem to get on the same page — and your kids are caught in the middle
  • You’re giving everything to your family and running completely on empty
  • You’re not sure if what you’re experiencing is normal parenting stress or something more
  • You love your kids fiercely and still sometimes feel like you have no idea what you’re doing
  • Your teenager is shutting you out and you’re scared of losing them
  • You’re trying to parent well while also managing your own anxiety, trauma, or mental health
  • You became a parent and somewhere along the way stopped being a person

Good parents ask for help. The fact that you’re here says a lot about the kind of parent you are.

Our Approach to Parenting Counseling

When you work with us, you’re not going to get a checklist of things you’re doing wrong. You’re going to get a therapist who actually listens — to what’s happening at home, what you’ve already tried, and what kind of support would actually make a difference for your family. We use CBT, ACT, attachment-focused therapy, and trauma-informed approaches, but we fit the tools to you, not the other way around.

We offer sessions in person in Roseville or virtually throughout California, because we know how hard it is to carve out time when you’re already stretched thin.

We Support Parents Through a Wide Range of Challenges!

Every parenting experience and family dynamic is unique – You may be struggling with one of the below, or something else. Whatever you’re experiencing, we’re here to help you through it.

New Baby & Early Parenthood

Adjusting to life with a newborn, establishing routines, managing anxiety, and navigating the identity shifts that come with becoming a parent for the first time — or the fourth.

Postpartum & Perinatal Support

Postpartum depression, anxiety, OCD, and the emotional weight of the perinatal period. Because parenting is hard enough without carrying that alone too.

Parenting Teens

Navigating the complexity of adolescence and the art of staying in relationship with a teenager who’s pushing you away.

Parenting a Child with Mental Health Challenges

When your child is struggling, the whole family feels it. We help you show up for your child without losing yourself in the process.

Co-Parenting After Divorce

Building a consistent, stable environment for your kids across 2 households. We help you & your co-parent communicate effectively and put your children’s wellbeing first even when it’s hard.

Single Parenting

Balancing your own wellbeing with the demands of parenting alone. We help you find sustainable rhythms without burning out completely.

You can be a great parent and still need support. Those aren’t contradictions.

Asking for help isn’t a sign that you’re failing. It’s a sign that you care deeply and that you’re willing to do the work to show up better for the people who need you most.

The Light Within Difference

We take an holistic, integrative approach to address your mental health at the root level.

Because we don't follow the 'cookie-cutter' insurance models, we have the freedom to use more effective, holistic tools that actually get to the root cause faster. We combine this with evidence-based modalities - CBT, ERP, EMDR, Brainspotting, ACT, trauma-informed care - but it's always paced to you, collaborative, and safe.

The highest quality of personalized care without outside interference.

Collaborative sessions that look at your life, body, and mind as a whole.

Meet us where you feel safest - In person or virtually.

Real, sustainable change - Not quick fixes and coping mechanisms.

The greatest legacy you can leave your child isn’t a perfect childhood; it’s a parent who was brave enough to heal their own heart.

What is parenting counseling and how is it different from family therapy?

Parenting counseling focuses specifically on you as a parent — your challenges, your patterns, and your strategies. Family therapy typically involves multiple family members in the room together. Both can be valuable, and we can help you figure out which makes the most sense for your situation.

Do both parents need to attend sessions?

Not necessarily. Many parents come individually to work on their own approach. If co-parenting alignment is the goal, joint sessions can be helpful but they’re not required to get started.

Can parenting counseling help with co-parenting after divorce?

Yes. We help co-parents develop communication strategies, navigate conflict, and create consistency for their children across two households even when the relationship between parents is strained.

My teenager refuses to go to therapy. Can parenting counseling still help?

Absolutely. Often the most effective starting point is working with the parent — helping you understand what your teen might be communicating through their behavior and how to stay in connection with them even when they’re pushing back.

What if my child has a mental health diagnosis — can you help me navigate that?

Yes. Parenting a child with anxiety, OCD, depression, ADHD, or trauma history comes with unique challenges. We help you understand your child’s experience, communicate effectively, and support their treatment without burning yourself out.

Is parenting counseling just for moms?

Not at all. We work with all parents — moms, dads, single parents, same-sex parents, step-parents, and anyone in a caregiving role.

What if I'm struggling with my own mental health while trying to parent?

This is incredibly common — and incredibly important to address. You can’t pour from an empty cup. We help you tend to your own wellbeing as part of becoming a more present, grounded parent.

How do I know if what I'm going through is normal parenting stress or something I need help with?

If it’s affecting your relationships, your wellbeing, or your ability to show up for your kids the way you want to — it’s worth talking to someone. You don’t need to be in crisis to benefit from support.

What ages of children do you work with in parenting counseling?

We support parents of children of all ages — from newborns through teenagers and beyond. The challenges shift significantly across developmental stages, and we tailor our support accordingly.

How do I prepare for my first session?

Come as you are. Think about what you’d like to achieve and any questions you have. Bring information about previous treatment or medications if applicable.

Ready to Heal?

Imagine feeling truly yourself again - Grounded, connected, and at peace.

We work alongside you to help you understand what’s keeping you stuck and create meaningful, lasting change. Whether you’re navigating OCD, anxiety, trauma, grief or another life challenge, we provide thoughtful, evidence-based care to support real healing and growth.
