There’s no shame in needing help
What starts as relief can quietly become the thing you need relief from.
Most people don’t set out to develop a problem with substances. It starts as a way to cope — with stress, pain, trauma, anxiety, or just the overwhelming weight of daily life. And somewhere along the way, the thing that was helping starts hurting. Substance abuse therapy isn’t about judgment or willpower. It’s about understanding what’s underneath — and finding a real way through.
At Light Within Counseling, we work with the whole person — not just the substance use. We look at what’s driving it, what it’s been solving for, and what needs to shift for lasting change to actually stick.
No matter the substance, recovery is possible.
We support individuals in reclaiming their lives from various forms of chemical dependency and habitual use. Whether you are seeking total abstinence or a harm-reduction approach, we help with:
Alcohol
Navigating social pressure, chronic use, and the cycle of “using to unwind.”
Marijuana (Cannabis)
Addressing dependency, low motivation, and the impact on anxiety levels.
Nicotine & Vaping
Breaking the physical and habitual grip of smoking and e-cigarettes.
Pills/Opiods
Recovery from prescription painkillers (OxyContin, Vicodin, Percocet) or illicit opioids.
Benzodiazepines
Managing the complex recovery from anti-anxiety medications (Xanax, Valium, Klonopin).
Stimulants
Support for misuse of ADHD medications (Adderall, Ritalin) or other stimulants.
Club & Synthetic Drugs
Including MDMA, Ketamine, or “Bath Salts.”
Cocaine & Stimulants
Addressing the high-intensity cycles of stimulant use.
Signs it might be time to reach out:
- You’ve tried to cut back or stop and haven’t been able to
- Substance use is affecting your relationships, your work, or your health — and you keep going anyway
- You’re using more than you used to just to feel the same effect
- You spend a significant amount of time obtaining, using, or recovering
- You’re experiencing intense cravings that are hard to ignore
- You’ve given up things you used to care about
- You feel like you need it just to feel normal
- You know it’s causing harm, yet you still can’t stop
If any of these feel familiar, you’re not weak and you’re not broken. You’re someone who needs support — and that’s exactly what we’re here for.
How We Help You Recover From Substance Abuse
Substance use doesn’t exist in a vacuum. For most people it’s connected to trauma, anxiety, depression, or chronic stress — and treating the substance use without addressing those layers rarely leads to lasting change. Here’s how we approach it:
Skill Building
Real tools for managing stress, cravings, and emotional discomfort without relying on substances — mindfulness, stress management, and problem-solving strategies you can actually use day to day.
Behavioral Change
Learning to recognize the thought patterns and behaviors that lead to use — and replacing them with healthier, more sustainable alternatives.
Lifestyle Support
Looking at the bigger picture: sleep, routine, the habits and activities that make a life without substances feel worth living.
Understanding Emotions
Therapy helps individuals identify and understand their emotions, providing insight into how emotions influence substance use.
Emotional Processing
Techniques such as expressive therapy, role-playing, and journaling are used to process complex emotions in a safe setting, helping to reduce the emotional volatility that can lead to relapse.
Resilience Building
Over time, developing the inner strength to face life’s hardest moments without needing something to take the edge off.
Repairing and Rebuilding
Addressing the damage substance use has done to relationships — and navigating the process of making amends and rebuilding trust.
Communication Skills
Learning to express needs, set boundaries, and have honest conversations — the foundation of healthier relationships in recovery.
Support Networks
Building connections with others who understand what you’re going through — because recovery is much harder to sustain alone.
Recovery isn’t about willpower. It’s about finally getting the right support.
The cycle of substance use is self-reinforcing — and breaking it alone is incredibly hard. Therapy gives you something the willpower approach doesn’t: understanding, skills, and someone genuinely in your corner.
Substance abuse often walks hand-in-hand with other mental health challenges.

Trauma & PTSD

Anxiety & Depression

ADHD & Impulsivity

Other Mental Health Conditions
Such as bipolar disorders, major depressive disorder, autism, etc.
Therapy is the slow, brave process of untying the knots that the substance only managed to tighten.

Frequently Asked Questions About Substance Abuse Therapy
Have other questions or concerns? Don’t hesitate to reach out to us – We’re here to help you! Email us here.
Do I have to be sober to start therapy?
No. You don’t need to be sober to begin. Many people start therapy while still actively using — and therapy becomes part of what supports the shift toward sobriety. We meet you where you are.
Is this an outpatient program or inpatient treatment?
We are an outpatient therapy practice — not a residential or detox facility. If you need a higher level of care, we’ll help connect you with the right resources. For many people, outpatient therapy is exactly the right level of support.
What if my substance use is connected to trauma or anxiety?
This is incredibly common — and it’s actually one of our areas of specialty. We address substance use and its underlying causes together, which is often what makes the difference between short-term and lasting change.
Will you judge me for how much I've used or what I've done?
Never. Shame is one of the biggest barriers to recovery — and it has no place in our work together. Whatever you bring into the room, you’ll be met with honesty and compassion, not judgment.
What's the difference between substance abuse therapy and AA or other support groups?
Support groups provide community and accountability, which can be enormously valuable. Therapy goes deeper — addressing the underlying patterns, trauma, and emotional drivers that fuel substance use. Many people find both helpful at the same time.
What if I've tried to quit before and relapsed?
Relapse is a common part of recovery — not a sign of failure or that change isn’t possible. Therapy helps you understand what happened, strengthen your plan, and build more resilience for what’s ahead.
Do you work with families affected by a loved one's substance use?
Yes. Substance use affects entire families. We work with individuals navigating a loved one’s addiction — helping you set boundaries, process your own pain, and figure out how to support without enabling.
How long does substance abuse therapy take?
This varies significantly depending on the individual, the substance, and what’s underneath the use. We’ll give you a realistic picture early on and adjust as your needs evolve.
How do I prepare for my first session?
Come as you are. Think about what you’d like to achieve and any questions you have. Bring information about previous treatment or medications if applicable.
Ready to Heal?
Imagine feeling truly yourself again - Grounded, connected, and at peace.
We work alongside you to help you understand what’s keeping you stuck and create meaningful, lasting change. Whether you’re navigating OCD, anxiety, trauma, grief or another life challenge, we provide thoughtful, evidence-based care to support real healing and growth.
