Every child deserves to feel understood
Children carry more than we realize — and they need somewhere to put it down.
Children don’t always have the words for what they’re going through. But they show you — through their behavior, their mood, their reluctance to go to school, their meltdowns, their withdrawal. Child therapy gives kids a space that’s entirely theirs — where they can express what’s hard, learn to understand their emotions, and build the skills that will carry them for life.
At Light Within Counseling, our therapists genuinely love working with kids. We meet children where they are — using play, creativity, and age-appropriate approaches that feel natural, not clinical. And we keep parents in the loop every step of the way.
Therapy can be transformative during childhood. Children who participate develop:
Emotional Intelligence
Kids are still learning to identify and name what they feel. Therapy gives them age-appropriate tools to understand their emotions — so frustration, sadness, and worry don’t have to come out sideways.
Communication Skills
Many children struggle to articulate what’s bothering them. Through play and child-centered approaches, we help kids express themselves in ways that feel natural — not forced.
Stronger Relationships
Therapy improves how children show up with family, teachers, and peers — building social skills, empathy, and the ability to work through conflict without shutting down or acting out.
Confidence & Self-Worth
Children who feel truly understood develop a stronger sense of who they are. We celebrate what’s working while gently supporting the areas that need more room to grow.
Healthy Coping Skills
Instead of melting down or withdrawing, kids learn real strategies for handling stress, disappointment, and change — skills they’ll carry well beyond childhood.
Resilience
Life will keep throwing curveballs. Therapy helps children build the inner foundation to face hard things without falling apart — and to bounce back when they do.
We help children work through a variety of challenges:
Our team has advanced training in working with children facing various challenges:
Anxiety
Separation anxiety, generalized worry, social fears, school refusal, phobias — we help kids understand their anxiety and learn to face it with confidence rather than avoidance.
OCD
Intrusive thoughts, compulsive rituals, repetitive reassurance-seeking. We use specialized ERP (Exposure and Response Prevention) adapted specifically for children — the most effective treatment available.
Trauma
Grief & Loss
The death of a loved one, a pet, a friendship, or a family change. We help children process loss in age-appropriate ways that honor their experience.
Depression
Persistent sadness, low energy, loss of interest in things they used to love. We help children reconnect with themselves and find their way back to joy.
Behavioral Challenges
ggression, defiance, difficulty with rules or transitions. We look at what’s underneath the behavior — because behavior is always communication.
Life Transitions
Divorce, a new school, a move, a new sibling. Big changes are hard for kids. We help them adjust without carrying it alone.
Social Struggles
Trouble making or keeping friends, bullying, not fitting in. We build social skills and self-confidence in ways that actually translate to real life.
Signs your child might benefit from therapy:
- Anxiety or excessive worry that’s getting in the way of school, friendships, or daily life
- Frequent meltdowns, aggression, or big emotional reactions beyond what feels typical
- Withdrawing from friends, family, or activities they used to love
- Changes in sleep, appetite, or energy
- Declining grades or refusing to go to school
- Expressing feelings of sadness, hopelessness, or “I’m stupid” or “nobody likes me”
- Struggling after a major life change — divorce, a move, a new sibling, a loss
- Trauma symptoms following something scary or overwhelming
- OCD-like behaviors — rituals, repetitive questions, intense fears that won’t let up
- Difficulty making or keeping friends
How We Work With Children
Children aren’t small adults — and their therapy shouldn’t look like adult therapy. Everything we do is designed for where your child actually is developmentally.
Play Therapy & Art Interventions
Play is a child’s natural language. Through games, creative activities, and expressive arts, children process experiences and work through emotions in a way that feels comfortable and engaging — not intimidating.
Family Involvement
You are a partner in your child’s therapy, not a bystander. We communicate with parents regularly, provide strategies to use at home, and incorporate family sessions when it helps. What happens in the room extends into your home.
ERP for Childhood OCD
Specialized, structured treatment for OCD that’s adapted for children — effective, evidence-based, and always done at a pace your child can handle.
EMDR & Brainspotting for Trauma
Gentle, powerful approaches that help children process difficult experiences without needing to retell every detail. Kids often respond remarkably well to these modalities.
CBT Adapted for Children
Age-appropriate cognitive behavioral tools that help kids understand the connection between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors — and make real shifts.
Navigating Parent/Child Conflicts
When the home feels like a constant battleground, it’s hard for anyone to thrive. We work with families to identify the roots of conflict and implement gentle but firm strategies to restore harmony.
Leaning into the Power of the Parent
We believe that parents are the greatest experts on their own children and the most important agents of change in their lives. Therapy is most effective when the home environment supports the work being done in the office. Because of this, we prioritize parenting sessions and family therapy as a core part of our process. By involving you in the journey, we help bridge the gap between our sessions and your daily life. Together, we focus on strengthening connections, parenting strategies, and family harmony.
You know your child best. If something feels off, trust that.
Parents are often the first to notice when something isn’t right — and the first to second-guess themselves. If you’re wondering whether therapy might help, that instinct is worth listening to.
We work with children and families at every stage of childhood.

Child Therapy for Ages 6-8

Child Therapy for Ages 9-11

Child Therapy for Age 12
The bridge between childhood and adolescence. We support kids who are starting to outgrow child-focused approaches and transitioning toward teen therapy.

Child Therapy for The Whole Family
A struggling child affects the whole family. We offer parenting support alongside child therapy — because the best outcomes happen when everyone has the tools they need.
Child therapy isn’t about ‘fixing’ a difficult behavior; it’s about decoding the needs of a child who hasn’t yet developed the language to ask for help.
The Light Within Difference
We take an holistic, integrative approach to address your child’s mental health at the root level.
Because we don’t follow the ‘cookie-cutter’ insurance models, we have the freedom to use more effective, holistic tools that actually get to the root cause faster. We combine this with evidence-based modalities – CBT, ERP, EMDR, Brainspotting, ACT, trauma-informed care – but it’s always paced to you, collaborative, and safe.
The highest quality of personalized care without outside interference.
Collaborative sessions that look at your life, body, and mind as a whole.

How do I know if my child needs therapy or is just going through a phase?
Every child goes through hard seasons — but if struggles are persisting for more than a few weeks, significantly affecting daily functioning, or you have a gut feeling something more is going on, it’s worth reaching out. Early support is almost always easier than waiting.
Will my child have to talk about what's bothering them?
Not necessarily. Many children — especially younger ones — process through play, art, and movement rather than direct conversation. Our therapists are trained to meet kids where they are, using approaches that feel natural rather than forced.
How involved will I be as a parent?
Very. You’re a partner in your child’s therapy, not just a drop-off service. We communicate with parents regularly, share strategies for home, and involve you in sessions when it’s appropriate. Your involvement makes a significant difference in outcomes.
Do you use play therapy?
Yes. Play therapy is one of our primary approaches for younger children — because play is how kids naturally process their experiences. It’s evidence-based, effective, and feels nothing like what most people picture when they think of therapy.
What if my child doesn't want to come?
This is really common. Most kids warm up quickly once they realize therapy isn’t scary or uncomfortable. Our therapists are skilled at building rapport with reluctant kids — and it usually doesn’t take long before they’re actually looking forward to sessions.
Can you help my child process trauma?
Yes. We use gentle, trauma-informed approaches including EMDR and Brainspotting — modalities that help children heal without requiring them to repeatedly retell what happened. Kids often respond remarkably well to these approaches.
How long will my child need therapy?
This varies depending on what your child is working through. Some children see significant improvement in a few months; others benefit from longer-term support. We’ll give you a realistic picture early on and reassess regularly as your child grows.
Do you offer virtual sessions for children?
Yes — we offer both in-person sessions at our Roseville, CA office and virtual sessions throughout California. Many children adapt surprisingly well to telehealth, though in-person is often preferable for younger kids.
What's the difference between child therapy and family therapy?
Child therapy focuses on your child’s individual experience, emotions, and skills. Family therapy involves the family system as a whole. We often recommend a combination — or shift between approaches — depending on what serves your child best.
Do you work with parents separately from children?
Yes. Parenting support is a natural part of our work with families. Understanding your child’s experience and having your own space to process what you’re going through as a parent can be enormously valuable.
How do I prepare my child for their first session?
Just come as you are — both of you. You don’t need to prep your child with a script or explain therapy in a complicated way. A simple “we’re going to meet someone whose job is to help kids with big feelings” is plenty. Bring any notes about previous treatment, diagnoses, or medications if relevant — but mostly just bring yourselves.
Ready to Heal?
Imagine watching your child feel like themselves again — Lighter, confident, and at peace.
Your child deserves to grow up with the tools to handle whatever life throws at them. We’re here to help make that happen — one session at a time.
